While the details carved into the Venus tell us what was on the sculptor's mind, the details that are missing tell us what he or she considered to be unimportant. The Venus of has no face. One could argue that this is simply an oversight of due to the primitive technique of the sculpture, but the facts suggest otherwise. The artist here took great pains to sculpt the fine plaits in her hair, presumably a prehistoric fashion statement. In other words, the Venus of as a symbolic communication, depicts a fertile beauty whose personal identity is unimportant.
